Exploring the chemical composition of bamboo fiber

The chemical composition of bamboo fiber is mainly cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, which are all high polysaccharides, totaling more than 90% of the dry mass of the fiber, followed by protein, fat, pectin, tannin, pigment, ash, etc.

Cellulose is the main material that makes up the fiber cells of bamboo and is what makes it significant as a textile fiber. Due to the age of bamboo, its cellulose content varies, such as 75% for Phyllostachys edulis, 66% for 1 year old and 58% for 3 years old. The hemicellulose content of bamboo fiber is generally 14% to 25%, and the average content of moso bamboo is about 22.7%, which decreases as the age of bamboo increases, such as 24.9% for 2-year-old bamboo and 23.6% for 4-year old.
